Shah Alam II was a Mughal emperor in name only for much of his reign — blind, pensioned, and controlled in succession by the Marathas, the Rohillas, and finally the British after 1803. The Marathas issued rupees in his name as a political convenience, lending Mughal legitimacy to their own authority across territories where that name still carried weight with local populations. Vaphgaon was one of several minor Maratha-controlled mints operating under this fiction.
The 47-year span of this type reflects not continuity of rule but the stubborn persistence of a useful fiction.
