Struck at the Ahmadshahi mint in Qandahar during the reign of Ayub Shah, this rupee belongs to one of the most turbulent successions in Durrani history. Ayub Shah briefly held Kabul against his brother Mahmud Shah in a dynastic contest that had already consumed the Sadozai line for decades. His coinage is scarce precisely because his hold on the western mints was intermittent — Qandahar changed hands more than once during this period, and production was neither continuous nor stable.
