Aurangzeb's rupees from the Patna mint reflect the administrative importance of that city as the commercial gateway to Bengal and Bihar — one of the empire's most productive revenue territories. His nearly 49-year reign produced an enormous volume of coinage, but individual mint-year combinations remain surprisingly specific, as each regnal year required fresh die preparation under the imperial dating system.
Patna itself sat at the center of the saltpeter trade, a commodity the Mughals controlled and the European trading companies desperately needed for gunpowder production.
