Additional information

Alamgir II was a puppet emperor almost from the moment of his accession in 1754, placed on the throne by the wazir Imad ul-Mulk, who would eventually orchestrate his murder in 1759. The Muhammadabad Banares mint operated under regional authority during these years as Mughal central control over its provincial mints had effectively collapsed — revenue flows were increasingly intercepted by local governors and the expanding presence of the East India Company in the Gangetic plain.

The date range on this piece corresponds exactly to Alamgir II's entire reign.
