Transnistria — officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — is an unrecognized breakaway state that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 and has issued its own currency since 1994 despite having no standing in international monetary law. The lunar series rouble issues are produced for the collector market rather than circulation, which is why nickel plated steel strikes from this program routinely survive in pristine condition. The rabbit denomination fits a longer annual sequence the Pridnestrovian Republican Bank has maintained as one of its more consistent numismatic export products.
