Obverse description At centre, the State Emblem of the Russian Federation — a double-headed eagle displayed, crowned with three imperial crowns, holding an orb and sceptre, with a shield bearing an equestrian St. George on its breast — rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The Cyrillic legend РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ curves along the upper periphery, with two decorative square ornaments flanking the eagle at mid-field. Below the eagle, the fineness mark Ag 925 appears to the left and the silver weight 7,78 with the Saint Petersburg Mint privy mark to the right. The denomination БАНК РОССИИ / 1 РУБЛЬ and the date 2020 г. are inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

The Russian Geographical Society, founded in 1845 in St. Petersburg, is one of the oldest geographical organizations in the world and has historically operated with close ties to state power — its early expeditions were funded by the Imperial treasury, and figures including Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky and Przhevalsky conducted their Central Asian surveys under its institutional umbrella. Putin has served as chairman of the board of trustees since 2009, a relationship that has kept the RGS unusually prominent in modern Russian commemorative programs.
