The Novo-Neamț Monastery in Chitcani sits in one of the more peculiar jurisdictional tangles in post-Soviet geography — physically inside Moldova's internationally recognized borders, yet administered under Transnistria's unrecognized authority. Founded in 1864 by monks relocating from Neamț Monastery in Romania, it became a flashpoint during the 1992 Transnistrian War. The monastery's inclusion in Transnistria's commemorative rouble program reflects the breakaway state's ongoing effort to assert cultural legitimacy through ecclesiastical heritage.
