Francisk Skorina, the Belarusian polymath and physician, printed the first book in the Eastern Slavic world in Prague in 1517 — a translated Psalter in Church Slavonic with a vernacular Belarusian preface. He later moved his press to Vilnius, but his time in Kraków is where it began: he earned a doctorate in medicine from the Jagiellonian University there in 1512, making him one of the first people from Belarusian lands to hold such a degree from a Western European institution. This coin is one entry in a commemorative series tracing his geographic journey across European cities.
