Euphrosyne of Polotsk, the 12th-century monastic founder and manuscript patron who became Belarus's first canonized saint, was chosen to anchor this rouble series at a politically significant moment — the early years of Lukashenko's Belarus, when the state was actively constructing a national historical identity distinct from both Russia and the broader Soviet past. The selection was deliberate; Euphrosyne had renounced her princely heritage to establish scriptoria in Polotsk, making her an unambiguous symbol of pre-Kievan Rus' Belarusian cultural autonomy.
