| Additional information |
Transnistria — the breakaway statelet wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, unrecognized by any UN member state — has operated its own mint and banking authority since the early 1990s, issuing coinage that functions domestically despite having no standing in international currency law. The Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) series reflects a genuine conservation concern: the species breeds in small numbers in the riparian forests along the Dniester, and Transnistrian authorities have used wildlife coinage partly to assert the trappings of sovereign nationhood.
