Carl XV inherited a Swedish monetary system in genuine disarray — multiple parallel denominations operating under incompatible standards — and the Riksdaler Riksmynt was part of a deliberate rationalization effort launched in 1855 to bridge the old Riksdaler Banco system toward something decimalized and coherent. The reform was politically contentious, with the Riksdag debating the transition for years before implementation.
This type was rendered obsolete almost immediately after Carl XV's death, when Sweden joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union in 1873 and adopted the Krona.
