Issued to mark the 26th National Day of Oman on November 18, 1996, this coin commemorates Sultan Qaboos bin Said's consolidation of a modern state from what had been, at his accession in 1970, one of the least developed countries on earth — with fewer than ten kilometers of paved road and a single hospital. The Al Boum, a traditional Omani sailing dhow, connects the commemorative to Oman's deep mercantile history in the Indian Ocean trade network, a commercial reach that once extended to Zanzibar, which Oman actually ruled until 1964.
