| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a bold three-line Arabic religious legend in florid Nasta'liq calligraphy, the Shi'a profession of faith reading 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the Friend of God.' The inscription is rendered in high relief against a finely granulated or stippled background, framed by a plain inner border. The irregular hammered flan imparts a characteristically uneven rim typical of Qajar hand-struck coinage of this period. |
