Fath Ali Shah's coinage underwent a significant reorganization in the early Qajar period as the new dynasty worked to distinguish its monetary output from that of the Zand rulers it had displaced. The Tehran mint — re-established as a primary royal facility under Qajar administration — struck this rial type in volume, though survival rates vary sharply depending on the regnal year within the type's run.
Fath Ali formally assumed the throne in 1797 following the death of Agha Mohammad Khan, making issues from this first full year of his reign among the earliest of a coinage program that would eventually span nearly four decades.
