Obverse description Papal arms (shield bearing the Barbo family coat of arms) surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, centered in the field. The design is rendered in low relief in the medieval hammered tradition, with the shield occupying the majority of the coin's surface. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PAVLVS PAPA II, identifying the issuing pontiff, Pope Paul II (Pietro Barbo, r. 1464–1471). The strike is characteristically irregular, with slight weakness at the periphery consistent with hand-hammered billon coinage of the period.
