Fath Ali Shah's reign produced an extraordinary proliferation of mint activity across Iran, with regional facilities operating under varying degrees of central control. The Mashhad mint held particular strategic significance — it served the shrine economy of Imam Reza's sanctuary, one of the wealthiest religious institutions in the Qajar realm, and its output circulated heavily among pilgrims and the Khorasan merchant networks extending into Central Asia.
Type E distinguishes itself within the Qiran series by specific calligraphic arrangements worked out during the early 1830s as the shah's administration attempted greater uniformity across provincial issues. Mashhad examples frequently show uneven die alignment, a known characteristic of the facility rather than individual handling.
