1 Pound Portland cement

Issued to mark Egypt's push for industrial self-sufficiency in the late 1970s, this pound commemorates the Portland cement industry at a moment when the Sadat government was aggressively courting foreign investment and expanding domestic infrastructure following the economic isolation of the Nasser years. Egypt had been a cement producer since the early twentieth century, with the Helwan plant established in 1911 as one of the first large-scale industrial facilities in the country.
