The Holy Family in Egypt is a significant theme in Coptic Christian tradition, commemorating the flight of Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus through Egyptian territory — a journey that, according to tradition, lasted roughly three and a half years and covered sites from Sinai to Upper Egypt. Egypt's government has periodically issued coins on this subject partly as a diplomatic gesture toward the country's Coptic minority, which represents roughly ten percent of the population. The 2022 issue followed a period of heightened attention to Coptic heritage sites along the traditional route, several of which had received state-funded restoration.
