St. Ouen is one of Jersey's twelve ancient parishes, each granted its own commemorative pound coin in a series issued through the 1980s. The parish system in Jersey dates to the Norman administrative divisions established before the Conquest — Jersey's parishes predate English common law on the island entirely. This gold proof was struck for collectors rather than circulation, part of a deliberate revenue strategy the States of Jersey pursued aggressively during the commemorative boom of that decade.
KM#72b distinguishes this gold striking from the base-metal circulation issue and the silver proof variant within the same type.
