Additional information

The Resolute was a British Arctic exploration vessel famously abandoned in the ice in 1854 and later recovered by American whalers — a recovery that prompted the U.S. Congress to purchase the ship, refit it, and return it to Britain as a diplomatic gesture. When the ship was finally broken up in 1879, Queen Victoria had a desk made from its timbers and presented an identical one to the American president, a piece still in the Oval Office today.

Jersey's gold proof pound issues of this period were struck by the Royal Mint in low mintages for collector distribution, with the schooner series drawing directly on the island's historic maritime connections.
