Jersey's 1991 pound series commemorated historic vessels associated with the island's maritime trade, and the clipper Percy Douglas was among the subjects selected. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, Percy Douglas operated in the bulk cargo trade during the height of the clipper era, when Jersey-registered vessels were a credible presence in Atlantic and Far East shipping lanes.
The .925 silver proof was struck alongside a base metal circulation issue — KM#85 without the suffix — making this a parallel issue rather than a standalone commemorative.
