Obverse description The obverse features the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Arnold Machin, depicting a right-facing draped bust of the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The effigy is rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and drapery, characteristic of the Machin portrait used on Commonwealth coinage from the late 1960s onward. The legend ELIZABETH THE SECOND arcs around the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, while the date 1984 appears in the lower field flanked by small dot stops. The proof finish imparts deeply mirrored fields contrasting with frosted devices.
