Jersey issued a series of silver proof pounds in the early 1990s pairing zodiac signs with local vessels, a scheme that leaned heavily on the island's deep maritime history. The barque as a rig type had largely disappeared from working use by the early twentieth century, but remained a potent symbol for Channel Island communities whose prosperity had been built on seaborne trade and, earlier, on the cod fisheries off Newfoundland.
KM#88a is the silver proof variant of the base metal circulation type, struck at a controlled mintage for collector sets rather than general issue.
