Comments

Allied Irish Banks was formed in 1966 through the merger of three institutions — the Royal Bank of Ireland, the Munster & Leinster Bank, and the Provincial Bank of Ireland — but the group did not issue its own banknotes until 1982, when it consolidated the separate note-issuing traditions of its constituent banks into a single unified series. This note is from that first series.

The £1 denomination was withdrawn from circulation in Ireland in 1988, making the issue window for this series relatively narrow. De La Rue printed for multiple Irish institutions simultaneously during this period, and the 1982 AIB contract was unremarkable technically — no known major varieties or error printings have been documented for Pick 1.
