Obverse description Central device depicting the armorial shield of the East India Company, featuring the quartered coat of arms surmounted by a heraldic supporter arrangement. A ribbon below the shield bears the Latin legend AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE, meaning 'By the authority of the King and Parliament of England.' The date appears in the exergue beneath the arms. The entire design is contained within a raised toothed (dentilated) border.
