The 1 Pice was part of the first coinage series issued by the Republic of India following independence, introduced as the new government worked to displace the old British Indian types. The anna system it belonged to was already on borrowed time — India decimalized in 1957, rendering this series obsolete after just a few years of production. Short-lived by design rather than circumstance.
