| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device consisting of a crossed sword and key in saltire, the traditional ecclesiastical emblems of the Bishopric of Dorpat, set within a beaded inner circle. The field is occupied by a surrounding legend in uncial Latin lettering. The overall execution is characteristic of small hammered billon coinage of the Baltic region in the early sixteenth century. |

The Sede Vacante issue of 1528 fills the gap between the death of Bishop Johannes Blankenfeld — who died in Spain in September 1527 while appealing to Charles V against the encroachments of the Livonian Order — and the consecration of his successor. Chapter coinage struck during a vacant see was a recognized right in the medieval ecclesiastical tradition, and Dorpat exercised it here under considerable political pressure, with the Reformation already fracturing the religious establishment across Livonia.
