Beschrijving keerzijde Central device consisting of a crossed sword and key in saltire, the traditional ecclesiastical emblems of the Bishopric of Dorpat, set within a beaded inner circle. The field is occupied by a surrounding legend in uncial Latin lettering. The overall execution is characteristic of small hammered billon coinage of the Baltic region in the early sixteenth century.

Aanvullende informatie

The Sede Vacante issue of 1528 fills the gap between the death of Bishop Johannes Blankenfeld — who died in Spain in September 1527 while appealing to Charles V against the encroachments of the Livonian Order — and the consecration of his successor. Chapter coinage struck during a vacant see was a recognized right in the medieval ecclesiastical tradition, and Dorpat exercised it here under considerable political pressure, with the Reformation already fracturing the religious establishment across Livonia.
