Pattern coinage from Mexico's late 1970s period falls into a complicated institutional story. The Banco de México was actively evaluating design and metal options as silver had already been removed from circulation coinage years earlier — the last circulating silver pesos dated to 1967. A reverse trial in silver at this date suggests the mint was testing die quality or finish standards against a precious metal blank, not proposing a return to silver currency.
