Reverse description The central field bears a large Avis Cross — the cross of the Military Order of Aviz — with elaborate flared and floriated terminals, rendered in the hammered style typical of Portuguese colonial coinage of the early seventeenth century. The cross is centered within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, a reference to the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign you shall conquer', runs continuously around the periphery, separated by pellet stops.
