Sambhaji, eldest son of Shivaji, ruled the Maratha Empire from 1680 until his capture by Aurangzeb's forces in 1689 — he was executed after refusing to convert to Islam, a death brutal enough that Mughal chroniclers recorded it in detail. The date range on this piece is problematic: Sambhaji did not rule until after his father's death in 1680, so attribution to 1664–1680 almost certainly reflects a broader dynastic dating convention rather than his personal reign.
Maratha copper coinage of this period was largely regional in circulation, issued through local administrative centers rather than a centralized mint.
