The Pahlavi gold coin series was introduced in 1927 as part of Reza Shah's sweeping modernization program, which dismantled the Qajar monetary system and established the Bank Melli Iran in the same year. The 1 Pahlavi denomination was pegged to replace older Persian gold standards with a decimal system explicitly modeled on European practice — a monetary reform inseparable from Reza Shah's broader campaign of forced Westernization.
The large bust variety is specific to the early years of the series, before the obverse portrait was reduced in 1932. Collectors distinguish it from the subsequent small bust type by die alignment and the proportional relationship of the portrait to the coin's field.
