Oscar I convened a royal commission in the late 1840s to overhaul Sweden's cumbersome copper currency, which still operated on the old riksdaler specie system with absurdly large planchet sizes inherited from the 17th century. The 1853 pattern series explored radically reduced module sizes before the full decimal reform was codified. Type I distinguishes itself from the subsequent pattern variants by specific design details that were modified during the approval process — the Type II was struck the same year, meaning this piece represents an early rejected iteration rather than a production near-miss.
