Gustav Vasa's earliest coinage was produced under conditions of near-total monetary chaos. Sweden had no functioning royal mint when he took the throne in 1523, and the Uppsala operation was assembled hastily from whatever skilled workers and equipment could be secured following the expulsion of Danish authority. The Type II designation distinguishes a revised die arrangement from the first frantic issues of that inaugural year.
The billon composition reflects a silver supply problem that would dog Swedish coinage for decades — Vasa stripped ecclesiastical silver where he could, but minting still outpaced reliable bullion sources.
