Carl XV inherited a Swedish monetary system in transition. The 1855 currency reform had begun rationalizing the old riksdaler complex into a decimalized structure, and these small bronze öre issues were part of the practical infrastructure that reform required — low-denomination coins for a population still adjusting to the new reckoning. Carl died in 1872, and the series ended with him; Sweden's entry into the Scandinavian Monetary Union the following year made the entire riksdaler-based coinage obsolete almost immediately.
