This piece was struck under Israel's Coins and Medals Law, which authorizes the Bank of Israel to issue commemorative coinage independent of the circulating series. The 1992 program coincided with a period of significant monetary adjustment following the New Sheqel's introduction in 1986 — itself a corrective measure after the old Sheqel collapsed under inflation rates exceeding 400% annually in the mid-1980s.
