The gold Mohur of this type was struck under the authority of the Crown following the transfer of Indian governance from the East India Company after the 1857 rebellion. By 1870, the Calcutta Mint had been operating under direct British government control for over a decade, having been formally taken over in 1858. Production of gold Mohurs at Calcutta was never continuous — issues were intermittent, driven by demand from Indian elites and merchants who retained deep preference for gold coin over paper currency.
KM#481 is among the later Victorian Mohur strikes before the type was eventually discontinued as gold coinage for India was progressively phased out in favor of silver.
