The Banco do Brasil's reliance on the American Bank Note Company for this series reflects a structural reality of Brazilian printing capacity in the early 1920s — domestic facilities simply could not meet demand for quality intaglio work, and ABNC held the contract for much of the bank's output through this period. The 1st Print designation distinguishes this from subsequent pressings with minor but catalogued differences in plate detail and paper stock.
At one mil réis, this was among the lower denominations in active daily use, and circulation wear on surviving examples tends to be heavy.
