Wildemann is a small mining town in the Harz Mountains, and its officer prisoner-of-war camp was one of dozens of facilities Germany established across the country during the First World War to house captured Allied officers under the terms of the Hague Convention. Officer camps operated under different conditions than enlisted camps — prisoners were not required to work and received pay according to their home-country rank, which created an immediate practical problem: how to pay them without introducing Reichsmark currency that could fund escape attempts. Camp-issued scrip was the answer, valid only within the wire.
These Wildemann notes circulated in an almost entirely closed economy — the camp canteen, and nowhere else. Surviving examples are scarce simply because nobody thought to preserve them.
