The Rumänen-Bataillon A.A.B. was one of the prisoner-of-war or auxiliary labor units organized under German military administration during the First World War, drawing on Romanian nationals — likely captured soldiers or conscripted laborers — stationed in or around Strasbourg, then part of the German Reich. Unit-issued scrip of this kind circulated only within the closed economy of the camp or billet, preventing German currency from leaking into the hands of non-German subjects.
Yellow paper was a common distinguishing device for such internal currency, making counterfeiting or smuggling notes outside the unit immediately obvious to guards.
