Mannschaftsgefangenenlager Merseburg was an enlisted men's prisoner-of-war camp — the Mannschaft designation explicitly excluded officer prisoners, who were held under separate, more regulated conditions. Internal camp scrip of this type was issued to prevent captured soldiers from accumulating Reichsmarks that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with guards. The 1 Mark denomination sits at the functional middle of most camp scrip hierarchies, high enough for canteen purchases, low enough to limit the damage of theft or forgery.
1918 issues from German PoW camps are among the most variable in existence — printing quality, paper stock, and authorization stamps differed camp by camp, sometimes month by month as the war economy deteriorated.
