1 Mark Cassel PoW Camp

German PoW camp money occupies a peculiar corner of notaphily — these were internal scrip issued under direct military authority, legally binding within the wire but worthless outside it. Kassel held Allied prisoners throughout the war, and the camp's administration issued denomination-specific scrip to control purchasing within canteen facilities, prevent hoarding of Reich currency, and limit escape utility of any money a prisoner might accumulate.

Printed locally rather than through a commercial security printer, the production values are correspondingly crude. Paper consistency and ink quality vary across surviving examples in ways that suggest small, irregular print runs rather than a single authorized edition.
