Wattenscheid's municipal savings bank — the Sparkasse der Stadt Wattenscheid — issued emergency paper currency in 1914 as the outbreak of war triggered an immediate hoarding of coins across Germany. These Notgeld issues filled the gap left by vanishing small change within days of mobilization. The Sparkasse had no printing infrastructure of its own; such notes were typically produced by local commercial printers on short notice, which accounts for the variable paper quality seen across surviving examples.

The official stamp served as the primary authentication mechanism, applied individually to each note after printing.
