Obverse description At center, a stylized Cedar of Lebanon occupies the field, its broad layered canopy rendered in high relief; superimposed over the trunk is an ornate Arabic calligraphic monogram. The legend BANQUE DU LIBAN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script. Below the cedar, the denomination LIVRE and numeral 1 are inscribed in the field, with the dual date 2012 - ٢٠١٢ appearing along the lower rim in Latin and Arabic-Indic numerals.

Additional information

Issued as part of Banque du Liban's ongoing commemorative series honoring Lebanese cultural figures, this coin marks Amin Maalouf's 2011 election to the Académie française — only the second Arab writer ever admitted to that body. Maalouf, born in Beirut in 1949 and long resident in France, received seat number 29, previously held by Claude Lévi-Strauss.
