| Additional information |
San Marino issued aluminium lire throughout the 1970s and 1980s in annual sets largely aimed at collectors rather than circulation — the republic's arrangement with Italy meant Italian lire handled everyday commerce, leaving San Marinese coins free to serve a philatelic economy. By 1989, the mint was producing themed annual series; KM#231 belongs to the "History" set of that year, one of several thematic programs the republic cycled through during this decade to sustain collector demand.
