Bulgaria's nickel-brass coinage of this period was produced under the Zhivkov government, which oversaw the country's longest single rule under communist governance — Todor Zhivkov held power from 1954 until the regime collapsed in November 1989. The 1990 date on this type makes it among the final issues struck before the Bulgarian National Bank began transitioning monetary policy away from centrally planned structures.
KM#90 superseded the earlier single-lev type following the adoption of the revised state coat of arms in 1971, though the coin series using it wasn't fully rolled out until later in the decade.
