Estonia's Song Festival — held continuously since 1869 with the sole interruption of Soviet occupation — became a direct instrument of independence during the 1987–1991 "Singing Revolution," when mass outdoor gatherings served as de facto political protests. This 1999 issue marks the 125th festival. Nordic gold, a copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy developed specifically for high-volume coinage, was chosen by several European mints in the 1990s as an economical alternative to brass with better wear resistance and a consistent golden appearance.
