Leopold I's tiny billon kreuzer issues of the 1690s were produced across multiple Austrian mints simultaneously — Graz among them — as the empire scrambled to maintain a functioning petty-coin supply during the protracted and ruinously expensive campaign against the Ottomans following the siege of Vienna. The "landmünz" designation distinguished these from trade-grade coins, marking them explicitly for local territorial circulation rather than broader commerce.
Billon at this weight hovers near the threshold where silver content becomes almost notional. By the 1690s, the alloy in these pieces had degraded sufficiently that contemporaries frequently complained of their acceptance.
