Joseph I inherited the Austrian crown in 1705 as the War of the Spanish Succession ground on, and his Bavarian mint at München operated under conditions shaped more by military finance than orderly monetary administration. The Munich facility came under Habsburg control following the defeat and occupation of Bavaria after Blenheim in 1704, making these kreuzers a direct product of conquest — struck in a captured mint to fund an ongoing war.
The billon alloy at roughly 19% silver reflects the fiscal strain of the period. Joseph died in April 1711 of smallpox, ending the issue abruptly.
