Charles VI spent much of 1712 managing the fallout from the War of the Spanish Succession, having recently pressed his claim to the Spanish throne before reluctantly abandoning it upon becoming Holy Roman Emperor the previous year. The Munich mint's production of small billon kreuzer in this period was driven by chronic shortages of fractional coinage across Habsburg territories, a persistent problem that no treaty resolved. Billon issues of this type circulated hard and were frequently clipped, making unworn survivors genuinely scarce.
