The Thanjavur Nayaks ruled as subordinates of the Vijayanagara empire before its catastrophic defeat at Talikota in 1565 effectively left them autonomous. Raghunatha Raya, who governed from 1600 to 1634, was unusual among Nayak rulers for his serious literary output in Telugu and Sanskrit — he authored works himself rather than merely patronizing poets. His copper kasu issues circulated within a regional economy still adjusting to the power vacuum left by Vijayanagara's collapse, filling a practical denominational need that imperial mints no longer reliably served.
